Love Food Hate Waste

The Facts
- We throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food every year – about a third of what we buy – when mostly still edible
- About 40% of this food that is still good enough to eat is fruit and vegetables
- We throw away more food than packaging in the UK every year
- Food Waste, sent to the landfill, is one of the major contributors to the production of greenhouse gases
- Around 20% of our climate change emissions are related to the production, processing, transportation and storage of food
How can you help?
Love Food Hate Waste is full of advice on how you can start reducing your food waste without delay. It’s worth a browse but in the meantime, here’s a few of our favourites to get your started...
The best thing that can happen to food is that it makes it onto your plate and is enjoyed rather than throwing it away
Home composting stops food waste ending up in the landfill and producing greenhouse gases – and your garden will love it.
- Learn how to read date labels: Whilst you should eat food before its ‘use-by’ date, a ‘best-before’ date is simply a quality guide and ‘display until’ an instruction to shop staff.
Watch your portions – many of us cook too much and just throw leftovers away. Love Food Hate Waste has a Portion Planner that suggests how much to cook and ways to measure it.
Be creative with leftovers. Turn stale bread into breadcrumbs; make egg-fried rice with leftover rice; make stock or soup with the chicken carcasss; don’t forget good old bubble & squeak... and you’ll find many more on the Love Food Hate Waste website
The freezer can be a Food Lovers storage hero – as long as it’s energy-efficient. In order to be as green as possible, keep your freezer as full as possible.
