For most of us tea is no more than a daily thirst quencher, drunk without a passing thought. For Alex Probyn, however, tea is something of an obsession. He has worked and tasted his way around the world as a classically trained Master Tea Blender with Tetley.
However, far from one tea blending into another, as it were, he discovered that not only are there hundreds of thousands of different kinds of tea, but their flavours alter with the time of year or even day they are picked as well as how they are blended and brewed.
Frustrated with the samey flavours in your average cuppa, Alex decided to start blending his own for friends and family. Such was the response that in 2006 he set up Blends for Friends, blending teas and herbal infusions matched to people. It’s a novel idea – you fill in a questionnaire about a friend on their characteristics, hobbies, physical appearance and so on.
