Winery

The Romans made it, medieval monks made it and now we are making it again. There is nothing unusual about English wine.

David & Linda Carr Taylor established the vineyard, in the beautiful 1066 countryside just north of Hastings, more than 30 years ago and quickly gained international recognition for their award winning English wines. In 1985 they were one of the first to pioneer commercial English sparkling wine for which their reputation is now firmly established, winning many awards including a Gold medal in 1988 & 1999 in the Challenge International du Vin.

Their son, Alexander, has joined the company as winemaker, after gaining winemaking experience in New Zealand and Oregon.  In 2004 he won the Vintners’ Scholarship and Vintners’ Cup, the highest award of the International WSET wine diploma.  His passion, in England’s cool climate, is producing fresh, clean, fruit driven English wines.

Varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as Bacchus, Kerner and Schonburger provide a magical blend of old and new flavours.  Situated in the picturesque heart of rural Sussex, the vineyard also has its own traditional winery and visitor centre.

The most recent addition to the Carr Taylor range is a delicious selection of versatile fruit wines including cherry, ginger and mead, fermented and matured to a traditional Sussex recipe.

The Carr Taylor Estate is open to the public everyday and visitors can take a vineyard trail, which gives information on the vineyard and vines.  This is then followed by a visit to the winery and bottling room to see the vats and presses and learn some of the wine-making techniques. Finally, visitors can return to the shop to sample some of the wines and browse in the well-stocked gift shop. Visitors can also picnic by the pond with a glass of chilled wine, or opt for teas, coffees and cakes in the shop.

Guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement.
