Dolaucothi lamb is produced by a co-operative of eight tenant farmers on the National Trust Dolaucothi estate. Dolaucothi means ‘meadow of the pure rushing stream’ and the land is a designated conservation area with wetland and pasture, moorland and woodland. It supports many important birds - a colony of sandpipers and the rare red kite and the tenant farmers follow farming methods that respect the environment, protecting historic features and enhancing wildlife habitats.
Originally brought together by a training programme they were inspired to develop their skills and progress ideas by working together, to add value to their product. All passionate farmers, they now follow RSPCA Freedom Food welfare standards for their sheep.
Each farm produces anything from between 200-800 lambs that include such traditional and rare breeds as Welsh Mountain, Beulah Speckle Faced and Balwen. Born in March, the lambs are weaned in mid-summer and put out on the grassy pastures of the Cothi Valley. Working with local abattoir, Oriel Jones & Sons, they supply whole legs of lamb to regional Sainsbury’s stores or by mail order, direct to the public.
