Farm Shop
The Peak District Farm Shop is actually run by two farming families, who rear rare breed beef from Dexter and Welsh Black cattle, lamb from Herdwick and Texel sheep and all manner of pork products from Gloucester Old Spot pigs.
It is for their bacon and sausages that they were a winner in the National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards. The pigs are raised outside, maturing at their own rate and fed on fresh fruit, vegetables, waste milk, pig nuts to supplement, but nothing else. This in turn ensures fabulous-tasting meat.
They sell a wide selection of joints and cuts of meat online, delivered frozen to preserve freshness and delivered in boxes lined with very eco-friendly sheeps' wool - a natural insulator.
As one of the judges for the Fine Farm Produce Awards, I think the bacon is 'pert' with lovely creamy fat.
