Robin and Debbie Slade first set up Scrubby Oak Fine Foods in August 2005 with the idea of re-introducing the Great British public to the delights of cooking with sweet fruit vinegars. Fruit vinegars were a well known and “must have” ingredient common in the majority of larders through out the country as recently as the 1960s. Their real heyday was during the Victorian period, where thanks to their uniqueness - best described as being part syrup and part vinegar - they were used in a wide variety dishes from starters to main courses and in desserts.
We still stay true to the Victorian ideals of taking time and care in making our products laid down in our recipe from 1898 and in the preparation of our products today. We use only whole natural ingredients sourced as locally as possible, often selecting old varieties for their superior flavour and colour. Traditional techniques in production are employed such as sieving through muslin, which, although they may take longer, result in what we believe is a better and more natural product.
We now have nineteen sumptuous flavours in our range, with unusual flavours such as a Horseradish with all the flavour but without the heat, Lavender and Spiced varieties. The only real dilemma is which one to try first? Our products are artificial additive- and gluten-free, with a shelf life of two years once opened.
Culinary inspiration may be found in the recipe section of our website or by visiting our stand at shows, where there is always the opportunity to taste our products and foods made with them. Our products are available through independent food stores, farm shops and delicatessens - please visit our website for your nearest outlet.
New products this year include Ginger Pickled Pear Quarters, an ideal accompaniment to Cheeses, Charcuterie and Asian dishes. And don't forget our extra hot Chilli Pickled Onions for the chilli buffs amongst you. And a new historic Victorian chutney is planned for later this year, with presentation bottles for Christmas.
